This is classic BS propaganda. That sickening, stupid Hollywood background music is grossly inappropriate to the reality of what was happening on Okinawa. It's true that the US did rescue and help Okinawan civilians, and that the Japanese lied to them and told them they would be raped and murdered ---- but it took a long period of the most horrifying carnage and slaughter of innocent civilians of all ages before the fighting finally ended. Read the great book by George Fiefer "The Battle of Okinawa" for the horrifying, shocking, unbelievably brutal details. It was the worst battle ever fought by the US, and the most horrible of WW2. The enormous death and destruction and civilian suffering is beyond human comprehension to this very day.

There's a tale associated with this that is too oddly specific not to be true. Mr. Towers and other HQ personnel that arrived some hours after the finding of the train wouldn't know this. The story could only have come from the tankers and if anyone knows more about it, please reply. Anyway, the story is that the train wasn't found by chance, in fact there were some Finnish soldiers on the train. Most of you will know that Finland had allied itself with Germany, not in an ideological way but only because they were both fighting the Soviets. In 44 they repudiated that alliance and were at war with Germany. Finnish soldiers unlucky enough to be in Germany when that happened were thrown in concentration camps. Some of those soldiers were on that train and escaped at this siding. They found these tanks of the 743rd and were lucky enough not to be shot at (Finn uniforms resembled German uniforms). They somehow made it clear that they weren't Germans and convinced the tankers to go "that way" because something important was over there. The lead tank put the Finns on the front glacis because they were suspicious of these men that appeared to be in German uniforms. If it was a trick they'd be the first to die. The Finnish soldiers led them to the train. I no longer recall where I read this, so if somebody knows more please add to the story.
